THE driver of a van is lucky to be alive after his vehicle crashed off a bridge into the swollen flood waters of the River Tamar this morning.

The white highways van was swept a quarter of a mile downstream by the flood water at New Bridge, Gunnislake, between Callington and Tavistock.

By a miracle, the driver escaped, shocked but not seriously hurt.

A police spokesman said the driver had suffered a suspected broken arm and had been taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for treatment.

The emergency services were alerted at around 9.30am.

The A390 road has been closed and a spokesman for Devon County Council highways said the bridge could remain closed for at least a week for repairs to the stone parapet.
