Godolphin Atlantic 5, Helston Athletic 1

GODOLPHIN Atlantic produced arguably one of their best ever Peninsula League performances by putting five goals past division one west title rivals Helston Athletic - despite playing an hour of the game with ten men.
The hosts, with the scores level at 1-1 at the time, had Scott Flannigan sent off on the half hour mark, despite the foul on Mark Goldsworthy being committed by Ollie Pinnell.
But riled by the controversial incident, Godolphin took the game by the scruff of the neck and Helston had no answer, as they opened up a five point lead at the top of the division one west table.
Godolphin were one up inside the opening two minutes when Lee Paxton found space on the edge of the box before finding the bottom corner with the tamest of efforts.
Helston were level after 12 minutes when Jordan Adlard's quickly taken free kick beat the wall and Godolphin goalkeeper Nathan Prentice.
Then came the moment of controversy. Referee Jon Harris waved play on when Goldsworthy was scythed down on the halfway line by Pinnell and from that resulting advantage Liam Eddy was chopped down on the edge of the area by Prentice. The Godolphin keeper was fortunate to stay on the pitch, before the referee's assistant flagged for Pinnell's challenge. But to everybody's amazement and after a stoppage of six minutes, the red card was shown to Flannigan. The defender only started the game after Tim Peacock pulled out in the warm up.
The decision only seemed to spur Godolphin on and they led at the break when Richard Griffin produced a superb finish after rounding Helston goalkeeper Jason Robertson and scoring from the tightest of angles, with the help of the post.
Derek Martin's men then added a third goal after 49 minutes, the outstanding Luke Rigby slotting home Kyle Brown's cross.
In blazing sunshine Paxton then claimed his second of the afternoon after 59 minutes when he tapped into an empty net after Aaron Dilley's effort was parried by Robertson.
And the scoring was complete in the 66th minute when Griffin fired into the bottom corner.
