British Transport Police (BTP) officers are appealing for the public’s help to identify a man they would like to speak to in relation to an attempted theft from a train in St Austell.

Investigators have released CCTV of a man they would like to speak to who they believe can assist them with the investigation into the attempted theft, which took place between Exeter and St Austell on Sunday, December 15.

Detective Constable Dave Bailey, based at BTP Plymouth, is leading the investigation.

He said: “The victim was travelling between Exeter St Davids and Truro on the 7.25pm service from Exeter.

“After the train left St Austell, a member of the public on board the train noticed that the victim’s suitcase had been tampered with.

“It is not believed anything was taken but we are treating this incident as an attempted theft.”

Extensive enquiries have been ongoing to trace the person responsible for tampering with the victim's luggage have been unsuccessful, he added.

Officers are now seeking the public’s help to identify the man in this photograph as it is believed he will have key information which can assist police.
