IT HAS been billed as the chance to stay in a gallery, with every room a work of art in its own right.
The grade two listed Georgian House Hotel in Penzance's Chapel Street is being transformed into the latest in a growing trend for super-stylish bed and breakfasts.
Eight artists have been chosen to decorate a room each in return for free accommodation and an exhibition space to showcase their work.
The Artist Residence is the second project for Justin Salisbury, whose first hotel in Brighton was featured on Channel Five's The Hotel Inspector.
The TV show slammed the Sussex establishment for its dirty windows, grubby carpets and boring breakfasts. But reviews have picked up since the TV makeover and the 22-year-old, who was still a student when he started the venture two years ago, has decided to expand.
He and his partner, art director Charlie Newey, 23, started work on the former hotel in Chapel Street almost a year ago. Charlie said: "It was just a completely derelict building. It used to be a very renowned hotel. It was such a shame to have a building like that doing nothing.
"Chapel Street is an historic area and Cornwall has a brilliant art scene so it fitted well with the Artist Residence concept."
Woodchip wallpaper, stained carpets and plastic headboards were replaced by a blank canvas in each room for the artists to work on. The couple advertised on the internet for artists to create bespoke spaces in each of the eight en-suite rooms and said they were inundated with applications.
The artists were chosen for their eclectic range of styles and, with three rooms now virtually finished, they hope to welcome their first guests next month.
Charlie told The Cornishman: "The rooms we have finished are very young and fun and vibrant. It is a really exciting project."
They also hope to open a cafe, bar and shop, as well as run artists' workshops during the winter months.
