Willy has two sons in their thirties, Happy, the home bird, who talks big like his father, but is always destined to mediocrity. Biff the older son by a couple of years has spent the last fifteen years away from home in a variety of jobs and less salubrious company. He has come home to find everyone worried about Willy's erratic behaviour and increased level of talking to himself. When Linda, his wife; devoted to her husband despite his attitude to her explains to the boys that he has been trying to commit suicide, the stage is set for his life to unravel. Memories that he would rather suppress come to the fore and dramatically reveal the full extent and reasons for his terrible relationship within the family. Other characters; both real and imaginary, wanted and despised, heighten the tension as the play races towards it denouement.
Nigel Croft's first studio direction marks the return of Kevin Kibbey to Sterts to play the title role. Bernice Strickland (fresh from playing a very different character in Calendar Girls) plays Linda, and Casey Knight appears as Happy. Richard Barberry makes a welcome return to the stage as the psychologically broken Biff.
