DOCTORS from the Royal Cornwall Hospital took the top honours at an awards ceremony.
Two doctors from the obstetrics and gynaecology department picked up the top prizes at the regional awards for medical staff in the South West.
Laura Reddin was named 2013 junior trainee of the year and Tom Smith-Walker took the 2013 trainees' trainee award at a ceremony in Torquay.
Mr Smith-Walker has just finished his specialty training at the Royal Cornwall Hospital and is currently working as a locum consultant, while Dr Reddin has just completed her first year of specialty training with another six years to complete.
Both are hoping to take up permanent posts in the county in the future.
Susie Bates, obstetrics consultant, said: "Tom's peers voted for him because he is a great role model, colleague and teacher.
"Laura has achieved a great deal both clinically and academically this year."
Mr Smith-Walker said: "This is the first time the awards have been held. Winning these awards does feel quite significant because it was our peers who chose who won.
"They singled us out and it is nice that people have recognised the hard work that we have been doing."
He said the award was welcomed by both winners but was also good news for the whole department.
"It's nice for us to have some positive recognition," he said. "The department has members actively participating in regional and national training programmes as well as contributing to international events. It is great to be part of an active unit."
Dr Reddin said: "Hopefully this will encourage others to put themselves forward."
