Police are appealing for information following a suspected arson attack at a disused cattle market in Wadebridge yesterday evening.

Fire crews from Wadebridge, Bodmin, Padstow, St Austell, Launceston and St Dennis were scrambled to the derelict building on Polmora Road after the alarm was raised at 9.20pm.

Firefighters spent more than four hours bringing the blaze under control.

Some local residents had to be evacuated from their homes following fears the fire could spread to nearby properties.

Fire crews finally left the scene at 2am this morning. Today an investigation will begin to establish the cause of the blaze.

A representative from Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police and Fire Service investigators will attend the scene daytime on Sunday January 26 to conduct a thorough examination.

“Anyone who has information is asked to ring the police on the non-emergency telephone number 101 and quote incident 802 of the January 25 2014.”
