A HOT air balloon had to make an emergency landing after spinning out of control in the skies above Newquay.

The alarm was raised at around 8pm last night with Newquay Airport contacting the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service to say the balloon was coming down in the Crantock area.

Five fire fighters from Newquay and six from Perranporth raced to the scene.

While on the road, fire crews spotted the balloon descending and tracked it to the sand dunes between Perran Sands Holiday Park and the golf club.

"The balloon landed and the four persons on board fortunately were unharmed," said a spokesperson for the fire service.

An investigation has now been launched.

Oh no it didn't make an emergency landing, this is a regular landing area for this ballon. This was all caused by the utter panic of an naive air traffic controller who was told by the ballon pilot that he was "rotating". These same controllers are responsible for the landing of commercial airliners when they arrive and leave NQY....God help us!
