Chris Wright’s injury time strike sealed the victory which took Bodmin to the top of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League premier division on Saturday evening.

But Bodmin looked anything but leaders as they allowed a 2-0 half-time lead to be cancelled out by second from bottom Cullompton, who had taken only one point from their previous ten away games.

Indeed Cullompton looked the more likely to snatch a winner as they pushed forward in the last 15 minutes against a Bodmin team who lost their shape and confidence.

The visitors had to be considered very unlucky to have left Priory Park empty-handed because their second half fightback was worthy of at least a point.

Wright had given Bodmin a 29th minute lead after good work by Seb Broomfield and Danny O’Hagan but there was a huge slice of good fortune about their second goal four minutes before the break.

Sam Matthews found himself in space wide on the left and seemed to be looking to pick out Wright on the far post but his cross hit the inside of the woodwork and rolled into the net.

Wright almost made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time but Cullompton keeper Ryan Lewis made a save, the significance of which became clearer as the second half developed.

Central defender Dan Kenyan gave Cullompton renewed hope by smashing in a 57th minute goal and it was 2-2 in the 71st minute with Jack Towill sliding a low shot past Bodmin keeper Kevin Miller.

And three minutes later Towill should have put the visitors ahead. Miller made a fingertip save to deny Luke Skinner but the ball broke to Towill who somehow drilled his close range shot into the side netting.

Cullompton created another opportunity in the 78th minute with substitute Skinner dispossessing Shane Jewell in the penalty area and firing a low shot past Miller but also inches wide of the post.

Skinner then had Miller stretching to tip over a 25-yard blockbuster as the visitors saw the chance to pull off a shock result.

To their credit Bodmin got themselves off the ropes to create a spell of late pressure which ended with Jewell’s left wing cross being fired in by Wright in the six yard box with only a minute of injury time left.
