A WORLD-FAMOUS make-up and prosthetics artist who has worked on Hollywood blockbusters with A-list actors is setting up a studio to teach the art form in Falmouth.

Neill Gorton has worked with directors such as Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott and Ron Howard and on the faces of Demi Moore, Johnny Depp and Clive Owen.

He has also worked on TV shows such as Doctor Who, Little Britain and Catherine Tate with his company Millennium FX, based near London.

The company’s most recent work featured in the multi Oscar award-winning film, Gravity. It follows work on Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, Children of Men, The Da Vinci Code, and The Wolfman over Mr Gorton’s 27-year career.

But now the Bafta award-winning artist, who is married to a Cornish woman, is looking to spend more time in the county.

At the end of the month, Neill and Lisa Gorton will launch a studio to teach the art forms through ‘prosthetics boot camps’.

“It’s kind of a personal reason why we wanted to being the business here,” said Mrs Gorton, originally from St Day. “We have a four-year-old daughter and wanted to spend more time with my family.

“But the business also fits with the town and the art education at Falmouth University.

“We decided it would be a very nice place to be have part of our business. It is a great fit with the personal creative development of the area.

“We are really pleased with the response so far, because it was quite a gamble to open in Cornwall.”

The business has already more than 120 applications for an administration assistant role at the new Gorton Studio, which opens on Killigrew Street on March 30.

Recruitment for the first week-long course has also gone well, with bookings coming from the local area and around the world.

Mrs Gorton said: “People have been saying Cornwall is an amazing location to run the courses.”

The Gorton Studio will be the second branch of a training school for the company, following the launch of the first teaching school at the Millennium FX headquarters in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, in 2003 – which was the first of its kind in Europe.

As well as teaching, the studio’s six Falmouth tutors also plan to work with people in the creative sectors in the county through collaborations.

They are also looking for models. “People come from all over the place to have weird stuff glued to their faces,” said Mrs Gorton.

Millennium FX is currently working on Frankenstein for 20th Century Fox, starring Daniel Radcliffe and James Macavoy.

My mother made noses under instruction for Lawrence Olivier - apparently he had to have them as he didn't like one of his profiles. I helped make costumes for Wookies.
