IT IS hoped work will begin this autumn on Falmouth's new, larger Sainsbury's store, but it is unlikely to be open until late next year.

The company was granted planning permission in December for the 72,000sq ft store, with a large number of conditions attached.

This included securing a new location for the Vospers garage currently occupying the site.

It is set to give about £1 million for investment in Falmouth and Penryn as part of a legal agreement.

It could be used towards a shuttle bus, in-store promotion of the towns, town centre management, conservation of the neighbouring Jewish cemetery and public realm enhancement.

Ben Littman, regional development executive, said: "We plan to begin initial work on site in late autumn and will progress with the store building during 2013, with a scheduled opening date in late 2013.

"Planning applications often take time to be formalised and ours is no different."
