Mark Menhinick stepped down as manager of Wadebridge Town following Tuesday night’s 3-2 home defeat by Callington Town.
His assistant, Sash Wheatman, has agreed to take the number one role at Bodieve Park with immediate effect.
Wadebridge’s defeat on Tuesday left them eighth in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one west table, 19 points behind leaders Sticker.
Perhaps more significantly, the Bridgers are 18 points behind second-placed Mousehole, who have two games in hand on them.
Menhenick said: "I am taking time out. I set myself targets and haven't achieved them with the squad I've got."
Last week it was announced that Wadebridge had applied to take promotion should they finish in one of the top two positions but such a high finish is looking increasingly unlikely.
Wheatman is also joint manager of the Cornwall Fire Service football team with Lee Griffin, while Bridgers striker Luke Hodge is also an influential member of the fire service team.
