War premieres

A CONCERT in St Mary's Church, Penzance, at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 6, includes the world premieres of two new works by Cornish-based composers written to commemorate the First World War.

Pippa Drummond's Reflections On The Great War sets selected passages from the poetry of Ivor Gurney for soprano, Elinor Chapman, and baritone, Simeon Royle, and orchestra.

Stephen Brown's Two Sonnets By Rupert Brook (1914)'for mezzo-soprano, Maria Hesteltine, and orchestra includes settings of The Soldier and Peace.

The concert also includes two other iconic works by English composers that are connected with the Great War, The Banks of Green Willow by George Butterworth, who was killed in 1916 and Vaughan Williams' Third Symphony, a haunting elegy for the dead of the First World War.
