A WADEBRIDGE pub landlord has apologised after a video of him supposedly drinking an entire bottle of whiskey surfaced on the internet.

David Barnard of the Molesworth Arms was “dared” to take part in the neknominate drinking craze and uploaded a video to Facebook in which he appears to drink a bottle of neat Jack Daniels.

Neknominate, which is believed to have started in Australia and is sweeping across social media in the UK, is a dangerous new internet drinking craze that has reportedly claimed the lives of four men in the UK and Ireland.

The aim of the craze is to complete a drinking dare, normally "necking" a pint of alcohol, posting the video online and nominating one or two people to do the same.

Before Mr Barnard was about to drink the whiskey he was heard saying, “Here we go, this is what real men do”, and then held a pot of flowers to the camera before saying, “If I die, don’t use these flowers on my grave”.

Mr Barnard then drank the substance, which he claims was “cold tea”, and has now apologised for what he considers “bad judgement”.

“When I did it I had only been back in the country for three days after a three-week holiday in Asia and I was totally unaware of the problems the craze was causing in the press,” Mr Barnard said.

“The stunt was something I was duped into doing that day by all the boys at the bar who seemed to be doing this thing, and I was brought up not to jib out of things.

“I had an empty bottle of Jack Daniels, so I took some tea bags and diluted it with cold water, which is what I was drinking in the video.”

Mr Barnard has now removed the video from his Facebook page and apologised for any offence caused.

“It was bad judgement and I have apologised to everybody concerned, I was devastated when I saw heard the negative reaction and it doesn’t reflect me at all as a person as I’m not even a drinker,” he said.

A spokesman for St Austell Brewery, which owns the pub, said it has contacted its staff warning them not to take part in the internet craze.

“Since becoming aware of the recent social media craze, St Austell Brewery has contacted all of its pubs and staff alerting them to be vigilant and warning that no licensee should either encourage or take part in this,” the spokesperson said.

“We have spoken with the tenant featured on Facebook who has assured us this was a stunt using cold tea but accepts it was an error of judgement and has apologised for the incident.”

Sounds like Wadebridge is becoming a town for complete Idiots, 1st that guy in his early 30's the other wk jumping off the by-pass bridge at low tide, and now we have a Landlord doing something you would expect a teenager to do? Over the weekend just gone, a women in her early 40's from Wadebidge, said on her face book site, that she was going to take her puppy male Labrador to a beach because she had heard rumours that the Movie Actor Jonny Depp was seen there recently walking around? This is despite the fact in the past 4 wks on news/media including on the internet, there has been reports saying dog owners should keep away from beaches due to this palm oil that has killed 4 dogs since December 2013. So she was willing to risk her puppy all for the sake of an altergraph?
