TWO newlyweds from Truro have put their honeymoon plans on hold – to undertake an overseas adventure of a different kind for a multiple sclerosis (MS) charity in Cornwall.

Claire and Owen Hambly decided to delay their honeymoon so they could take part in the Merlin MS Centre’s Grand Canyon Trek in May.

The pair were married at Porthtowan’s Blue Bar in August, and instead of wedding presents asked guests to make donations to the charity.

Now they are going one step further by hiking more than 75 kilometres over five days through the desert heat of the national park in Arizona for the St Austell centre.

Mrs Hambly said: “We just wanted to do something a little bit different and this opportunity came up and we wanted to support the charity so we thought, ‘Why not?’

“It’s the opportunity of a lifetime, really.”

The challenge is a personal one for the newlyweds who met through Mr Hambly’s sister Holly Hambly, 29, an MS sufferer who works at the Merlin Centre.

The pair have dedicated their walk to Miss Hambly and her bravery.

Mrs Hambly said: “She’s such an inspiration because she does so much fundraising herself. She’s amazing, really, and just takes things in her stride.

“Nothing will stop her; she doesn’t let MS get in her way. She lives life to the full.

“I think she’s pretty chuffed that we decided to do this.”

The new Mrs Hambly, also 29, who runs her own design business, and Mr Hambly, 28, a carpenter, are now in intensive training for the trek.

Mrs Hambly said: “I’m training by doing long walks uphill and going to the gym; it’s mostly building up muscles in the legs and training your knees.

“I’m really excited, but a little bit nervous now.”

The pair are paying for their own travel and accommodation and are just over halfway to reaching their £4,000 fundraising target.

To help them bring in even more money their friend, chef Benedict Quinn, will be holding a gourmet dinner event at the Boardroom in Porthtowan’s Blue Bar this tonight.

Tickets for the meal cost £35, or for £50 supporters can spend the day with Mr Quinn, and can be purchased by e-mailing claire@aboedesign.co.uk or calling 07837 849868.

To sponsor the couple visit www.justgiving.com/clairean-dowenshoneymoontrek or text CMOH99 plus the amount to 70070.
