FALMOUTH Town Council is calling for the network manager post to be made redundant.

Councillor David Sterratt put forward the motion saying the town was "well served" by the council clerk and town manager.

The motion is to write to Cornwall Council saying the position of community network manager is an "additional expense which is not justified, considering the current financial climate the council finds itself in".

Members agreed to support it with no discussion taking place.

Mr Sterratt told the West Briton afterwards: "We have a town clerk, town manager and BIDs (business improvement district) manager and they are very proactive.

"We already have people that do the same job as the network manager and it gets confusing over what roles are whose.

"The concept of a network manager in a town is different from the villages."

Mrs Charlotte Chadwick was originally appointed network manager for Helston and the Lizard in 2009 before taking over in the Falmouth area as well last year.

She acts as liaison between Cornwall Council, local town and parish councils and councillors.

The addition of Falmouth and Penryn has been absorbed within her working week, with no additional funding, so scrapping it would not necessarily reduce the cost to Cornwall Council.

Helston Town Council described her as a "star" and complained about losing her to the Falmouth area two days a week.

However, Mrs Chadwick said that she was not only community network manager for Falmouth town itself, but also for Penryn and other parishes in the area.

"Falmouth is only one-ninth of the area I cover and I will continue to do the best I can within my role.

"I think my work speaks for itself."

And she told Helston council any attempt to axe the post would have to be discussed by Penryn Town Council and the surrounding parish councils.

"It will be interesting to see where that goes," she said.
