SHEA Cornish and Giddy Up Ginge showed their rivals the way in the Animo Pony Novice and Discovery championship qualifiers at Colraine Equestrian Centre, Truro.

This unstoppable combination opened their account on their first indoor outing of the season with a victory in the Pony Novice and only weeks later matched their winning performance with the top ticket in the Discovery.

Piloting his 16-year-old mare around the shortest route, the 12-year-old from Penzance, who is a member of the Western Hunt Pony Club was determined to post the fastest clear and take the top ticket to the novice finals being held at the Blue Chip championships in Gloucestershire.

Shea, who juggles busy sporting commitments playing football, rugby and hockey at Mounts Bay School, alongside competing his ponies said: "Ginge had been off with an injury for several months and it was brilliant to bring her back with a win. I only joined British Showjumping at the beginning of the year and it was disappointing to miss out on so many shows.

"I usually take Ginge hunting with the Western over the winter but we've now decided to play safe and just keep her for showjumping."

Chloe Burrough of Honiton provided the strongest challenge with her nine-year-old gelding Tallyho Charlie, while Bethany Andrew landed the third placed qualification with her eight-year-old gelding Larkmeadow Lenny.

"He's recently come back from injury and I've spent most of the season building him up," said 14-year-old, Bethany of Redruth.

"This was our first indoor show of the season and he's jumping out of his skin. I'm over the moon and thrilled that he's feeling so good."

Remaining tickets went to Poppy Padley (Mi Joosy Boast); Poppy Burford (Two For Joy); Georgina Hutchins (Red Arrow). Confirming their prowess against the clock, Shea and Ginge held their form in the 29-strong Animo Discovery qualifier holding off a challenge from Harriett McGovern of Devon with Station Fancy in the 13-pony jump-off.

Also winning through to the Hartpury College finals were: Daisy Hay (Charity IV), Bethany Andrew (Dunn & Dusted), Tom Teiken (I Love You Jenny), Otto Mead (Tiger Lily) and Poppy Burford (Two For Joy).

Amy Merrell from Stithians secured a duo of tickets in the 22-strong HorseQuest UK Sapphire championship qualifier on her eight year-old Irish gelding Lahinch PJ and with her six year-old SOS Unicorn.

"I was drawn early with my young pony," said the 14-year-old who is a member of Cornwall's junior academy.

"As there were only nine in the jump-off I decided to go for a safe clear and hoped it would be good enough to qualify. I was at the back end of the draw with PJ and knowing Unicorn had already qualified I decided to try him out against the clock."

Acquired via Pam Warren of Redruth in Ireland for the Merrell family, this 148cms grey is proving all they had wished for having also won the foxhunter class at the show.

"Amy has really clicked with PJ," said her mother Sandy. "It was great to see her having a crack on him. They lost crucial time when he slipped on their final turn but we're more than thrilled to qualify both ponies."

Ellie Tripp emerged with the third placed qualification on Crindle Miss Sunshine while remaining tickets went to Rachael Vicary (Slinky Malinky); Tegan Noy (Lenamore Hero); Lauren Blunsdon (Red Hot Chilli Stepper) and Asha Smith (Birchills Puff Daddy).
