A MOVE may be made to limit the number of second homes being built on part of the Lizard peninsula.
St Keverne Parish Council is considering following Porthleven’s lead in creating a neighbourhood plan.
If adopted, the plan becomes a legal document and can be used during planning applications to guide development in the years to come.
One spin-off from this could be to give preference to planning applications for houses that are not for use as holiday or second homes.
Speaking at the parish council meeting on Thursday Councillor Dom Brandreth said: “If you want Coverack to grow or St Keverne to grow, you can say so in the neighbourhood plan.
“It’s not a mechanism for stopping houses being built, but a mechanism for getting houses built in the right area.
“It could say that new houses have to be for primary residency.
“I know many other councils are looking at that.
“It’s not to stop second homes – they’re still going to go through the normal planning process – but it’s another way of getting homes for local people in the right area.”
Some members reminded the council that it had created a parish plan ten years ago at considerable effort and expense. Councillor Roger Richards said the parish plan had not been used and a new neighbourhood plan could be a similar waste of time and money.
Councillor David Lambrick said: “If we have this plan, we must use it as a tool and not just leave it on the shelf like the parish plan.”
Councillor Robert Beadle said the plan would “allow us to have a big say in how our villages are developed. I think it’s an absolutely cracking idea.
“I think this will demonstrate to local people that we do care what our villages look like in ten years’ time.”
Following a motion from Mr Lambrick, it was agreed to look into funding and find out more about creating a neighbourhood plan.
