Sailing: Falmouth Week round-up: August 22

AFTER what had been a rather disappointing last day to this year's Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week Regatta due to poor weather, a lively final prizegiving for all Series prize winners made up for some competitors not being able to race.

Steve Nicholls, the regatta organiser, started proceedings by thanking all those volunteers whose efforts had made the regatta a success, from the Race Officers and their Committee boat teams, administrative staff, rescue and mark laying boat crews and the helpers at the Sailing clubs.

This year had seen the successful introduction of an IRC Mini Series at the beginning of the week at the request of local competitors and its success was due to some excellent race management by Roger Hollingsworth and skilful mark laying by Neil Andrew and his team.

The standard of racing this year was very high in all classes and it was encouraging to see the return of the Flying Fifteen class to Falmouth.


The dinghy classes had some excellent racing, despite a drop in numbers attending the event.

George Hayes, of Hayes Parsons Marine Insurance, who had sponsored the Carrick Fleet presented the prizes.

The highly competitive visiting yacht "Antix" (John Allen from Whitby) was presented with the "Granite and Tin" trophy and given some Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week polo shirts to wear on his tour of other regattas on the South Coast.

The Top Yacht in the Bay Fleet was "General Khaos" (Ian Jakeways) and in the Carrick Fleet was "Haggis" the Cornish shrimper sailed by Mark Peek from Rock.

The Dinghy top boat was the "49er" of Christopher Thomas of St. Mawes Sailing Club.

The prizegiving ended with a long ovation for the organisers from the competitors.

IRC Yachts


The main part of Falmouth Week for the IRC Yachts this year was the new Mini Series over the first three days.

This event came under the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association with the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club as the host Club.

The racing took place in Falmouth Bay with three races scheduled each day from Sunday to Tuesday in a variety of wind strengths.

All the nine races were sailed in lighter winds, apart from the Monday on Mylor YC day when there was a brisk breeze.

Each day some skilful and tactical sailing was required to read the wind shifts.

In Division 1, Stuart Sawyer's Black Dog, now at the J Cup in Plymouth, had some good practice and dominated but nevertheless she did not achieve a clean sheet of results as George Pettifor's Foxtrot spoiled it to come second overall with Stephen Cutforth's Daydream third and these two had a good battle.

In Division 2, there was some very close racing for first and third overall.

On Helford River SC's first day, Geoff Davies in Scorpion won the day over the three races.

On the second day, David Cunliffe's Encore fought John Allen in Antix and managed 1st for the day and repeated this on the final day.

The home Port for Antix is Whitby and she certainly travelled a long way to compete and also sail some other West Country events.

John Hick in the smallest yacht, the J24 Jitterbug, was consistent in challenging for third overall and secured it on the last day after close racing with Scorpion on handicap. When the points were totted up, Encore secured first overall ahead of Antix.

A reception and prizegiving followed at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club and several yachts went on to compete in the remainder of Falmouth Week.

The club together with POFSA intend to build on this IRC Mini Series 3 day event with many yacht owners finding it more difficult for crews to spare a full week of sailing.

RESULTS: Division 1: 1, Black Dog; 2, Foxtrot; 3, Daydream. Division 2: 1, Encore; 2, Antix; 3, Jitterbug.

Mylor YC


With sunshine and a perfect wind speed for racing what more could you want?

On Mylor Yacht Club's day on Monday, competitors in the Carrick fleet also enjoyed well organised racing from the courses set through spotting, signalling, safety boat attendance and the results service.

The 90 boats in the Carrick fleet were spread over 10 classes, the Ajax being the largest with 19 boats on the start line jostling for position, highly competitive as usual but getting away cleanly.

This is Falmouth Week and for many the high point of the racing calendar. The impressive fleet of 13 large Working Boats also came to the start line in good order, all on starboard tack and mostly well timed.

On Mylor's day there are cups to be won in this class. First on corrected time, Rita (John Peters) won the Ord Statter Cup, fourth placed Florence (Andrew Ferris) won the Corke Cup being the highest ranked wooden B class boat and Cousin Jinny (Graham Pearce) had a special award of the Mike Sharp Cup.

At the clubhouse, filled to capacity for the daily prize giving, there was the usual buzz of excitement as competitors, competitors, members and visitors enjoyed teas, a barbecue and music from the Jazz Warriors.

Falmouth Town


Tradition dictates that on this day the Bay classes are sent on a long race, unfortunately this year some patchy winds made the Champagne Race longer than expected for many, while in the Carrick Roads, the Traditional Fleet had more wind as did the Dinghy classes in the Upper Carrick Roads.

In these trying conditions it was amazing how close the racing in the bay was.

In IRC 1 "Foxtrot" (George Pettifor) came out on top in a race lasting over four hours for some of the slower yachts.

While in IRC 2, the race again taking four hours only 20 minutes separated the first and last yachts.

The visiting yacht "Antix" (John Allen) beating the local yacht "Encore" (David Cunliffe) into second place.

In the Carrick Fleet, "Stella"(Ian Jenkins) overcame some determined competition from some larger Falmouth Working boats to come first.

The traditional Champagne prize giving was held over till Thursday to allow all competitors to watch the Red Arrows display which sadly was not to be.

The Mayor of Falmouth Geoffrey Evans presented the prizes and he was thanked by Steve Nicholls, chairman of the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association, for all the support that the Falmouth Town Council gave the event.

St Mawes


After strong winds and rain lead to the cancellation of all of last year's St Mawes Regatta events (sailing and shoreside), it was particularly pleasing that the day brought glorious sunshine and a gentle northerly breeze this year.

Some of the Carrick Roads fleets were speculating that this would be their last race of the week given the poor forecast for the following day, and this did turn out to be the case.

In the Working Boats B Class, despite a poor start after an unsuccessful attempt at a port tack flyer, Phil Slater's Rebecca soon got to the front of the fleet, where she enjoyed a close battle with Sam Heard's Abigail Rose.

Rebecca eventually crossed the finish line off St Mawes in first place, but the winner on handicap was David Carne's Victory (although this was subject to protest) followed by Ian Jenkins' Stella which did enough to win the week overall.

The Working Boats C Class was won by Simon Berryman in Zilpha. In the Falmouth 18 Foot Restricted Class, Bob Edwards' Magpie prevailed over Rob Collins in Myrtle, as she did in all but one of the week's regattas, and there was a similar story in the Shrimper fleet with Mark Peek's Haggis holding off John Hindmarsh's Salamanda for the fifth time.

In the Ajax Class, Roger Wood's Amalthea finished fifth – her worst result of the week, but she had already wrapped up the series – while David Liddington's race win in Athena clinched second overall.

Third place in the series was still open to four other boats, but it was Artemis sailed by Ian Woods which eventually secured this by finishing fourth.

Amongst the Bay classes, although the Marieholms would get to race again on Saturday, Friday's results – Bridget Macklin's Annika victory, Paul Evans's Kalinka second and Rupert Scott's Sundance in third after a close battle with three other boats throughout the race – secured the series for Annika.

Racing was followed by St Mawes Sailing Club's traditionally excellent teas, the reinstated entertainments on the quay and a visit by Falmouth Marine Band.
