CORNWALL begin the pursuit of the Bill Beaumont Cup on Saturday when they face newly promoted North Midlands in their opening qualifying fixture at Redruth (3pm).

The Black & Gold reached Twickenham last season only to lose in a thrilling final to Lancashire and now, under the coaching direction of Graham Dawe, bid to go one better.

Dawe will not be under-estimating a North Midlands side which reached the County Plate final last year, but he was buoyed by Cornwall's victory in the Tamar Cup last week when they beat Devon 17-0 at Polson Bridge.

He said: "We are looking for a good start at Redruth with hopefully a good crowd there to help us; there is a hunger and keenness in this squad and great pride in the shirt."

Cornwall have another home tie a week later against Gloucestershire at Camborne. They complete their pool fixtures on May 24 away to Hertfordshire at Hertford RFC. The final is at Twickenham on Sunday June 1 (12.15pm).

Redruth scrum-half Greg Goodfellow stressed the importance of the fabled Cornish support for their team.

He said: "The supporters will have their part to play we really need their support on the touchline to give us that extra boost I cannot underestimate the influence a Cornish crowd in full cry has on the team.

"I am a Scot but to pull on the Cornish jersey and play in front of a great Cornish crowd brings the hairs up on the back of my neck."

Cornwall squad: Lewitt (Cornish All Blacks), McAtee (Redruth), M Westren (Redruth), Webber (CAB), Ducker (Camborne), Shepherd (St Austell), Goodfellow (Redruth), Ford-Robinson (Cambridge), Salter (CAB), Freestone (Clifton), Jenkins (CAB), Cook (Redruth), Whittle (Falmouth), Fuca (Redruth), BJ Chapman (CAB), Bartle (Camborne), Friend (CAB), Hilton (CAB, capt), Notman (Redruth), Paterson (Ivybridge), Tripcony (CAB), Tompsett (Redruth), Vinnicombe (Redruth), Webb (CAB), C Williams (Redruth), R Westren (CAB), Venner (St Austell), T Rawlings (CAB), Parsons (Redruth), Murphy (CAB).
