POLICE evacuated eight homes and closed a road after a gas leak in Bodmin last night.

Firefighters from the town's community fire station went to St Nicholas Street just before 9pm after receiving a call.

The service reported the leak was found to be coming from a derelict house, which had an external pipe ripped from the wall.

The crew isolated the supply and was soon met by police and gas engineers, leaving the incident in their care at around 9.45pm.

Residents were asked to leave the vicinity and the road was shut amid safety concerns.
