Recent research shows that the divorce rate has increased for the first time in seven years with an increase of 4.9% between 2009 and 2010. This is equal to one couple divorcing for every two that marry. The upsurge in divorce is likely to be a result of recession since during every recession the divorce rate peaks. Adding to this, Christmas can be such a stressful time of year; financially and emotionally and it is often that the stresses of the festive season combined with the culmination of the year that result in relationship difficulties. December and January are notorious for the breakdown of relationships and in order to counteract that this year, Relate Cornwall are encouraging couples to use their services this January. CEO of Relate Cornwall, Crystal Pearce said "Relate recognise that ironically when couples need the most help they are also the worst off financially and, often, this is a contributing factor to issues that they face. We wanted to offer the locals an opportunity to try Relate and see what we have to offer and whether it is of help to them. We are aware of the increase in relationship problems and believe the recession and financial trouble to be playing a large part in this. Therefore we are offering discounted introductory sessions in January so that our service is more affordable and hopefully people will visit us so together we can reduce these statistics."
The common issues include debt (especially due to Christmas), trying for a baby, family feuds, rising unemployment and often bereavement in the Winter and these issues can be incredibly hard to overcome whilst maintaining a strong bond. But with divorce and break-up's on the increase it is important to hold strong and invest in what really matters – your relationship. "It is important to maintain a strong and healthy relationship, it is very easy for our lives and jobs to get in the way but Christmas is essentially about family and Relate strive to protect that. We can help with issues such as debt so that you will be in a stronger position together moving forward" explains Crystal. Relate will be running special offers throughout January to help combat these issues. To find out more about Relate and the January offer visit www.relatecornwall.org or phone 01726 74128
