A NEW mother from Redruth stole mascara and a teeth whitening kit because her benefits payments had been delayed.

Zoe Booth, 28, of Valley Gardens, took the cosmetics, worth £21.99, from Boots on Trelowarren Street in Camborne on October 28, last year.

Alison May, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said Booth was subject to two conditional discharges from 2012 when she stole the items, including one for theft.

Elliott Moore, defending, said: “Her benefits had been messed around but what she does say is that is no excuse whatsoever for her behaviour.”

He added that since then Booth had given birth to a son in December, was staying in a mother and baby placement and was working with drugs and alcohol addiction charity Addaction to overcome her drug problem.

Magistrates fined her £70 for the theft, ordered her to pay £60 towards the costs of the prosecution, a £20 victim surcharge and £21.99 compensation.

If it was food she stole, it would be more understandable, but not having any money is no excuse for stealing mascara and a tooth whitening kit. They aren't essentials, are they?
