After an unprecedented wet start to its run, the Miracle Theatre's production of The Importance of Being Earnest will be back in the open air this evening.

Although the touring theatre company prides itself on carrying on regardless the unseasonably wet weather has proved something of a challenge this year.

Last week the theatre company had to move its preview night, due to take place at Redruth's Fairfield, indoors to Redruth School.

This week the play moved to Trebah Gardens where it was due to be performed on the beach. But the continuing rain meant Wednesday night's performance was cancelled and last night it was once again moved indoors, this time to the gardens' cafe.

A spokesman for the company said it had been an "extraordinary start, completely the opposite of how we would want it to begin".

However, despite the hurdles presented by the weather, the production has brought in rave reviews, with audiences describing it as "seriously brilliant" and the best adaptation so far of Oscar Wilde's most popular play.

Unusually for the company this production has stayed fairly true to the original script – with the most notable departure being a cross-dressing Benjamin Dyson playing the indomitable Lady Bracknell.

Director Bill Scott has said: "We approached The Importance of Being Earnest as a jewel, sparkling with witty one-liners, that really doesn't ask to be interfered with."

With the rain looking as though it will hold off tonight's performance will take place on Calstock Playing Field, before moving to the Minack Theatre next week. For more information and tickets visit www.miracletheatre.co.uk.
