RNLI lifeguards at Crantock beach rescued a family from the River Gannel yesterday after their kayak capsized in challenging conditions.
A man, woman and child were kayaking in the river when they began to struggle in the strong tide and surf at about 5pm.
The kayak capsized and all three were thrown into the water. The man and child managed to get back onto the vessel, but the woman didn't and was struggling to get to safety.
First year RNLI lifeguard Sam Johnston saw the incident from the beach and immediately paddled out on a rescue board. He put the woman onto his rescue board and paddled her back to shore.
Meanwhile senior RNLI lifeguard Steve Daily went to help the other casualties and escorted them back to the beach on their kayak.
When they arrived back at the beach the lifeguards received a round of applause from members of the public who had watched what happened.
Lifeguard Jof Owen, who was at the water's edge throughout the incident, said: "There was a strong tide and big swell yesterday which made conditions particularly dangerous."
