THE absence of affordable public transport linking Newquay airport with Truro was heavily criticised at a recent Scilly council meeting.

“I find it frankly incredible that an airport that is publicly funded and supported doesn’t have proper public transport access,” said Richard McCarthy. “It seems to be a totally bizarre situation.”

Policy and resources committee members had heard authority chairman Amanda Martin speak of the cost of getting from the airfield to Truro

“I don’t know how we rationalise or make it cost effective but some form of shared means of transport should be looked at,” she said.

Calling for a joining of forces to combine and “streamline” transport Ms Martin said: “There are horrific stories about taxis costing in the

region of £46.”

James Francis said the transport link was critical to islanders and

Committee chairman Gaz O’Neill said the matter felt it was something that should be addressed to by the airport owners Cornwall Council.

“We have tried that and we haven’t always been successful,” said Mrs Martin.

It was also noted that the car hire company used by the council was not Newquay-based.

We are talking Cornwall Council here... That explains everything - from the closure of the Penzance heliport and everything that follows. Did anyone expect it to be any different??
