Proposals to close Penzance's Poltair Hospital backed

PROPOSALS to close Poltair Hospital in Penzance have been backed by the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (RCHT) board.

Poltair, along with Cornwall's other cottage hospitals, has been run by private company PCH since autumn 2011. However, in that time it has shut the in-patient beds at Poltair four times, with the latest closure ongoing since October 2012.

Poltair staff see up to 50 outpatients a day, but inpatient services ended in 2012 following staff shortages.

RCHT managers want outpatient clinics and staff moved to West Cornwall Hospital and other sites in Penzance to "integrate" services.

A public consultation is being carried out until February and a final decision is due later this year.

Will this be another Tehidy exercise where proceeds from the sale of the House and land disappear and nothing is put in place to replace it? Another step in full centralisation of medical services in Truro? God help us all.
