One of the biggest weekends of the year in Penwith is nearly upon us, and giants are set to roam the streets of Penzance as part of the Golowan festivities. In the run-up to the event, organisers showed off more than 180 recycled Golowan flags in a stunning display on Marazion beach.
The 10ft colourful silk flags were set up to mark Midsummer’s Day on Monday and the feast of St John the Baptist.
Former Golowan director Andy Hazelhurst, who set up the display with the help of Judith Parkin and Liz Tyrrell, said the flags were beautiful.
The larger-than-life annual event continues today with a number of events for children and adults, as well as the mock mayor election this evening.
Tomorrow night will see dancing and revelry as the Big Bop Golowan Ball gets people into the swing of things at the Exchange on Princes Street.
On Saturday it is Mazey Day, which has a packed programme for visitors including street entertainment, music, dance, parades, games and food. And if that’s not enough, its’s Quay Fair Day on Sunday with plenty more to enjoy.
The Cornishman is joining in the giant theme and on Mazey Day the team will be giving people the chance to pose for pictures in a giant photo board as well as selling copies of the paper with bumper goody bags.
