ST IVES holiday hotspot Porthminster Beach is among the top three beaches in the UK – and the top ten in Europe – in a new poll by holiday website TripAdvisor.
Cornwall celebrated the joint most entries in the UK top ten, along with Dorset, with three beaches.
As well as retaining its place from last year as the ninth best beach in Europe, Porthminster Beach also came in third place for the best beach in the UK, behind Rhossili Bay in Gower, Wales, and Woolacombe Beach in Devon.
Porthminster competed with beaches in Spain, Greece and Turkey, including the winner, Rabbit Beach in Lampedusa, Italy.
The beach is a half-mile stretch of golden sand and calm water making it family friendly, while boasting the rugged looks and breathtaking views of many of west Cornwall’s top beaches.
The ratings come from the TripAdvisor Traveller Choice Beaches Awards, based on reviews and ratings over the past 12 months.
Perranporth Beach in Cornwall scooped fifth place in the UK's most amazing beaches awards, with Newquay’s Fistral Beach coming eight.
James Kay, TripAdvisor spokesman, said: “These awards recognise the best beaches in the UK and worldwide, according to the travellers that have visited and given them the highest levels of praise.
“To have three British beaches named among the best in Europe just goes to show how lucky we are in the UK to have such stunning scenery right on our doorstep.”
