A Pool mother has spoken of the night that TV comic Rory McGrath drunkenly attacked her after she offered him refuge in her home.

Karen Hitchen is now taking civil action against the comic following the unprovoked attack in May.

The former panellist on the BBC show 'They Think It's All Over' hit out at Ms Hitchen after she offered him her sofa to sleep on when he became stranded during a boozy night out.

Ms Hitchen, 43, and partner Chris Allen said that when he entered their house the comic turned violent.

She said: “He screamed, ‘Get me out of here!’ “I said, ‘I’m trying to help you Rory, get you a coffee’.

“He just grabbed me by the hair and violently slammed my head against the wall. He dragged me down onto a pot which cut and bruised my back. I then fell and he pinned me down, banging my head on the floor repeatedly.”

McGrath, 57, kicked her partner in the face. The ex-Royal Navy chief petty officer restrained him with the help of Ms Hitchen’s teenage son, Jack.

The mum-of-three said: “He’s an animal. I was absolutely terrified.”

Her daughter, Charlotte added: “Later on I kept dreaming he had come back and attacked mum again.”

The couple had been at the Railway Tavern in Camborne to collect daughter Danielle, 25, when they met McGrath, whose mother lives in Redruth.

Ms Hitchen added: “I asked for a photo. He was quite happy. But then he started getting very vulgar. He tried to push his tongue down my throat. Chris told Rory to behave. That seemed to work.”

McGrath, of Cambridge, was arrested and spent a night in cells after the May attack. He was later cautioned for three offences of assault by beating.

He also sent an apology saying he was “sick with shame”, but later told reporters : “These things always look worse than they are.”

A spokesman for McGrath said last night: “The incident has been dealt with by police in the appropriate manner.”

You can vote kernow19 down if you like, but if someone tried to stick their tongue down my missus' throat and I caught him I wouldn't be inviting him home to kip on the sofa, neither would the missus. He would still be sparked out on the floor at the pub after being twice pummeled. Either really dumb or ulterior motive I'm afraid. Think about it.

He also sent an apology saying he was "sick with shame", but later told reporters : "These things always look worse than they are." I disagree they were as bad as they seemed. It was a drunken lout who happens to be well known taking advantage of someone who offered him hospitality.
