The Widdowpath Stream which originates inside Connon Bridge Landfill Site, near East Taphouse suffered a major pollution incident on Friday. It is understood that the foul water that percolates through the landfilled refuse has either overflowed or leaked through the plastic lining which is supposed to contain it. The Environment Agency in conjunction with SITA - the Company which operates the site on behalf of Cornwall Council are investigating to try and identify the source of the leak. In the meantime, the stream has been diverted to a tank on site to prevent further pollution to the stream.

It is understood that the levels of this foul water have been above the levels permitted by the Environment Agency for some time despite the Environment Agency urging SITA to lower it.

The site has been in use for 44 years and should close in two years time, but SITA have recently submitted a planning application to make the tip bigger and extend its life by another 22 years. Local residents are very much against this and cite this latest incident as another reason why it should be closed on time.
