POLICE have warned revellers to avoid going near the coast in Newquay tonight after a man was arrested in the early hours of this morning attempting to wade in the sea.

Conditions on the coast are due to be treacherous tonight, with more dangerous high waves expected.

Inspector for Newquay and St Columb Major Dave Meredith said: “For your safety and the safety of others please stay away from Newquay's beaches and promenades this evening. Extra police are on duty.”

The warning comes after a man was arrested after attempting to enter the sea on Towan Beach at 4.30am this morning despite poor weather conditions and surf of three to four foot.

Officers were able to throw a line for the man, bringing him safely to shore. He was then taken to hospital as a precautionary measure but arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

Since when did drunken idiots take any notice of such warnings however well meant they are? I only hope lives aren't put at risk trying to save anyone daft enough to ignore the warning.
