POLICE have arrested a man after he attempted to wade in to the sea while drunk in Newquay in the early hours of this morning.

The man was attempting to enter the sea on Towan Beach despite poor weather conditions and surf of three to four foot.

Officers were able to throw a line for the man, bringing him safely to shore.

Police secured a line to Sergeant Regie Butler, who waded out to pull the man to shore, because there was not time to wait for other emergency services to get there.

The man was then taken to hospital as a precautionary measure but arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

The rescue, which occurred at around 4.30am, followed a series of incidents in Cornwall this week which have led to a tragic fatality, as well as a number of near misses.

In Mullion on Thursday a young family were pictured peering over a sea wall before getting engulfed by a monster wave.

A search for a 27-year-old man from Guildford was called off after a body was discovered near to where he had been celebrating the New Year with friends by paddling in the sea near Porthleven at around 1.30am.

The conditions on Towan Beach, where the man attempted to enter the sea, were clearly poor after waves caused part of Beach Road to collapse in the early hours of this morning.

Darwin had something to say about the survival of the fittest. A drunk is obviously not amongst the fittest. The police officer was very brave and perhaps will get a medal 'something of the British Empire' the next time round. But, supposing the officer lost his life? Not knowing the drunk and the circumstances around the situation, it is difficult to come to judgement but I am not sure the officer's action was wise

About time idiots like this were arrested and made aware of how stupid their actions were.
