Two promoters aiming to bring speedway back to Cornwall are urging enthusiasts to support plans to create a new track at Bodmin Rugby Club.

An amended planning application has now been submitted to North Cornwall District Council for the new speedway facility and community cycle track on land near Lanhydrock.

The men behind the venture, Ashley Taylor and Grahame Smith say they would like the backing of fans throughout the county and are asking for letters of support to be sent to the district council’s planning department.

Mr Taylor said: “People’s support is very important to the future of speedway for Cornwall.
“The Exeter speedway application received in excess of 1,200 letters and e-mails.’’
A planning application was initially submitted in August, but additional details were required by the district council.
A public meeting in Bodmin in the summer was attended by speedway fans from across the county who backed the proposal to create a new team following the demise of the Trelawney Tigers who raced near St Austell.
But there were also a group of residents from Lanhydrock and Fletcher’s Bridge at the meeting who voiced reservations about allowing speedway near their homes, and were worried about noise nuisance and traffic problems that could arise.
John Roberts of Cleave Design, who are the planning agents for the project, said he was quite hopeful the plans would be approved.
“ We were successful in gaining planning permission for speedway at Plymouth Devils, Weymouth Wildcats and Exeter Falcons. We’ve had a good track record so far and hopefully if all goes well, we should see speedway racing at Bodmin in April.’’
