Principal Jonathan Burnett celebrates 18 years at Truro College.
THE role of principal of Truro and Penwith College is vacant as its current head plans to retire.
The college is advertising the job, with a pay packet of between £135,000 and £150,000 for the successful candidate, following the decision of its principal, Jonathan Burnett OBE, to step down at the end of this year's summer term.
Mr Burnett has been with the college for 18 years since he took on the role in March 1992, before the college had students or a building in place.
He said: "It has been a great privilege to be able to lead one of the best colleges in the country and I have enjoyed working with many committed and talented colleagues. The success of the college has been based on the contribution of our staff and, of course, the efforts and talents of so many students whose successes have laid the basis of our reputation."
Truro College opened in September 1993 to 742 full-time students and 1,300 part-time students.
Under Mr Burnett's leadership those numbers have grown to more than 6,000 full-time and 12,000 part-time students.
The college has also invested in curriculum development, staff numbers, and a series of major building projects.
It has received two excellent inspection reports, has been recognised with a Beacon Award in 2002, and awarded "designated outstanding status" by Ofsted in 2007.
Truro College merged with Penwith College in 2007 and a redevelopment of the Penzance site is taking place, with the first phase nearly completed and the second phase to be finished in 2011.

We will miss him greatly, but thanks to him we have a wonderful college with real strengths to take it into the future with enormous confidence."
