A PENZANCE councillor has resigned from the Liberal Democrats to join Mebyon Kernow.

Cornwall and Penzance town councillor Tamsin Williams, who was a member of MK in the 1990s, described rejoining the party as "coming home to where I properly belong".

Cllr Williams served on Cornwall County Council between 2001 and 2009 and has represented Penzance Central on Cornwall Council since 2009. She becomes MK's sixth Cornwall Councillor on the unitary authority.

Commenting on her decision to join MK, Cllr Williams said: "I believe that now is a crucial period for Cornwall and its future.

"I am excited to be a member of Mebyon Kernow – a political party free from the vested interests that dominate the London-based parties.

"After a decade as a member of the Liberal Democrats, it has become increasingly obvious to me that many of Cornwall's problems are a consequence of bad decisions made by the London parties.

"And it is clear to me that the local activists of the London-based parties continue to be undermined by the actions of their party bosses in Westminster.

"I feel privileged to be able to join the only political party 100% committed to Cornwall."

MK Party Leader Dick Cole has welcomed Cllr Williams into Mebyon Kernow.

"Tamsin is a passionate champion for Cornwall and I am absolutely delighted that she has chosen to join MK. I look forward to working with her as part of the MK team for many years to come and winning a better deal for Cornwall and its people."

Remember that in the Prime Ministerial TV debates in 2010 Gordon Brown said that the Tories would not protect Education or Police spending. David Cameron was eloquent in his silence and got away with not responding. The Liberal Democrats are complicit,

I rarely comment here but cannot let the comments of "torypzman" of Sep 14th pass. Tory councillors are no more able to dictate policing policies than any other flavour of councillor, they cannot directly affect 'unruly youth' or have much effect on town centre safety. Maintaining Penzance closed circuit TV works there, and thankfully at last the existing councillors have reinstated it. Up until the last election Penzance had the greatest numbers of police and support staff they have ever had, and the lowest crime figures for decades, with police and their partners reducing antisocial behavior and improving the outlooks for youngsters by a variety of incentives including Sure Start for mothers and newborns and other social intervention. This was achieved under two terms of Labour Government, and happened right across the UK. Your current Conservative and Liberal Democrat Coalition Government has massacred Police numbers generally which has had and is having an effect on YOUR town, with what has happened and what is planned causing sever lowering of police presence in the town and rural areas to 1970s levels, with more cuts planned plus attacks on the officers pay and conditions which is seriously affecting morale. This is mirrored right across the public services. I had hoped that with ALL Cornwall's MPs in the Government, that this would be a "golden age" for Cornwall..how wrong I was!

I have sympathy with thde view that any elected person who changes their party should stand down and force a by election. However, I suspect the Tories' best hope is a split vote against them, which is hardly a ringing endorsement.

Councillor Williams should resign now and call another election,She was voted in as a Libdem and not an MK, it would have been different if she defected to the Independents. We all however know that she lacks the courage to do so, because she knows she will be heavily defeated, this seat should be a Tory seat.

That tells us nothhing. You leave us hanging with the phrase 'Christian values'. If this is the case has he campaigned against poverty and deprivation in west Cornwall, spoken out against the need for food banks and the consequences or welfare reform, raised with David Cameron about the senseless waste of British life in Afganistan....? Penzance has been going down the pan since the 1980s when a Conservative Penwith Council gave planning permission for the mess that is Long Rock. Remember the stories in the publication 'Peninsula Voice'? Or the Tory Government bussing the drug takers and homeless from London into Penzance. The guy you refer to didn't even have the character to keep his ponytail in the face of Cameron's displeasure!

I tell you what they have done for Penzance! Mr Derek Thomas the last Conservative to hold office there was a fine upstanding man with Christian values, it's people like that that will put the unruly youth of the town in its place and ensure decent British subjects like me can walk at night in the town centre. Small business in the town has also suffered under the red tape brought in by socialists like the current councillors - A Conservative victory would be a victory for common sense.

Why on earth would anyone in Penzance want to vote Tory? What have the Tories ever done for Penzance?

Ms Williams majorities have been slender at best over the past 12 years partly because she is barely visible to the electorate and when she does appear she is sitting on the fence, like she did with Penzance harbour. Penzance councillors have had this habit of hopping between Liberal and Mebyon Kernow for a number of years always resulting in a thrashing at the ballot box, usually at the hands of the Conservatives. Her CC colleagues contain of motley bunch of traitors and bench hoppers as well, with one changing sides more that the Italians in the war! This move has done nothing but shine a very bright light on the desperate nature of Cornish Nationalism's flag ship. I for one look forward to a Conservative councillor representing Penzance Central once again.

Looks like the 'support team' have been out in force marking down any adverse comment. Well done lads but we guess who you are. You'll learn that you can't hide the truth with a few red arrows as you'll discover next may when the voters have their say.
