A PROLIFIC thief who stole three wallets from a shop in Falmouth was arrested after some good police work, Truro Magistrates' Court was told.

A picture from CCTV images taken at the Fat Face Shop in Church Street matched police intelligence briefing documents and was sent to Penzance where an officer recognised the man she had dealt with for similar offences. Carpenter Clifford Vaughan Townsend, 51, of Chywoone Place, Newlyn, pleaded guilty to the theft of the wallets worth £48 on March 19.

Julian Herbert, for the prosecution, said CCTV showed Townsend taking the wallets and leaving without paying. He had a number of previous convictions for shoplifting.

His solicitor, Paul Gallagher, said Townsend realised he was nearing the end of the road and changed his lifestyle, changing his friends, and would not offend again. He had been short of work, which was why he stole.

Townsend was given an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for a year. He had to pay £48 compensation.
