The proposal on the beach, taken by Ellie Garland of Watergate Bay Hotel

The leap year hasn't gone unnoticed in Cornwall today, with an apparent marriage proposal written in the sand at a north Cornwall Beach.

'Will you marry me?' was etched out on the shore of Watergate Bay, and was spotted by Watergate Bay Hotel's eagle-eyed digital marketing executive Ellie Garland.

Ellie said "I usually take a walk down the beach most days, taking photos and posting them to our Facebook, but today, completely genuinely, I just saw this in the sand!"

Making her discovery about 2pm, Ellie wondered if it might have been a couple who had been dining at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen, nearby, but said they haven’t managed to track down the (hopefully) happy couple yet.

"I've got no idea who it was" she said, "a couple of people were on the beach walking their dogs but no one was standing around it looking exceptionally happy!"

The leap year is traditionally famous for being the day women propse to their men, instead of the other way around.
