POLICE searching for a man in connection with the suspected murder of David Alderson who was found dead near a tin mine in Redruth are focusing their efforts on the Mutley Plain area of Plymouth.

An investigation into the death of David Alderson, 72, from Falmouth became a murder enquiry on Wednesday.

Police launched a man-hunt for Kevin Cooper, 33, from Redruth in connection with the suspected murder of Mr Alderson and have said yesterday they are focusing on Mutley Plain in Plymouth.

Cooper was seen with David Alderson in his car the night before his body was found.

He was last seen in Plymouth on Tuesday morning.

But the force is now appealing for more people to come forward who may have information to Cooper’s exact whereabouts.

Initial enquiries suggested Mr Alderson, a keen cyclist, had suffered a serious accident and had died at the scene, though no bicycle was found.

Police believed that Mr Alderson’s “significant” head injuries were consistent with a fall, but are now treating the death as suspicious and foul play is suspected.

Mr Alderson's body was found floating in a pond by a dog walker at the Wheal Maid mineworks near Carharrack shortly after 9am on Saturday, January 18.

Mr Cooper, who has been reported missing by his family, is described as white, 6ft 3, with brown, receding, straight hair and two upper teeth missing. He also has a tattoo of a rose with the word Nan on his neck.

He has been seen in the Falmouth, Redruth and St Austell areas, and was last seen in Plymouth in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Those with information are asked to contact them on 0800 056 0154 quoting police reference 331 290114 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or report online at www.Crimestoppers-uk.org
