Mousehole 1, Stoke Gabriel 1
(Mousehole won 5-3 on penalties)
Mousehole secured a home Throgmorton Cup quarter final with either Saltash United or Elmore after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over east division title hopefuls Stoke Gabriel at Trungle Parc on Saturday.
Cheered on by a good-size crowd, the Seagulls were on the back foot for long periods of the first half and it was the Devon side who deservedly led at the interval after Dave Worthington gave the visitors a 32nd minute lead.
But buoyed by some strong words during the half-time break from their player-boss Wayne Quinn, Mousehole produced a vastly improved second half display, although it wasn't until 11 minutes from time that they finally drew level when substitute Ross Duncan capitalised on a miskick from the Stoke keeper to score his first goal for the club and with it force the tie into extra-time.
With no further goals in the extra half-hour it was down to the lottery of the shootout to decide the outcome. And with the Seagulls holding their nerve to score all five of their spot-kicks, and home keeper Dexter King producing an excellent save to keep out one of the visitors' efforts, Martyn Moon then converted the decisive penalty, to the delight of the home players and supporters.
The victory earned Mousehole £300 in prize money for the best performance by a west division side in the competition, and the Seagulls now meet premier division opposition for a place in the last four with the tie set to be played on Saturday March 8.
