A SCHOOLGIRL who painted Mickey Mouse on her bedroom wall is helping to brighten up a care home in Falmouth.

Nikita Hunter has been putting her artistic skills to use at Trevern care home by transforming the glass walkway into an underwater scene, complete with crabs, fish and a mermaid.

The 16-year-old’s talents were bought to the attention of care home manager Penny Green, who was looking for some artwork to decorate the walls at the Cornwall Care-run home on Melvill Road.

Ms Green said: “It’s about bringing the outside in and to try to brighten up the communal areas of the home to give everything a lift and make them smile.”

Nikita’s grandmother, Anne Morrison, also works at Trevern.

When Ms Morrison showed her boss a picture of her granddaughter’s bedroom wall, the voluntary commission was made.

“I painted Mickey Mouse on my bedroom wall at home out of boredom,” said Nikita, who studies at Falmouth School.

“I have always been into helping people so when Penny asked me to do this said yes.

“There are lots of comments about the mural and that makes me smile.”

The next project for the schoolgirl, who has applied to study an art diploma at Truro College in September, is to paint some colourful beach scenes on canvasses for the dementia unit.
