THERE’S a young and fresh face in charge at one of Penzance’s oldest established businesses.
Max Holden, a 25-year-old marketing and design graduate from Ravensbourne College, London, has taken over the reins at Mount’s Bay Wine Company.
Overseen by Alan Beevor for the past few years, the business has been a constant presence near the top of Bread Street for the best part of three decades.
Now it is in hands of a young man with little practical experience of the wine trade but a great deal of enthusiasm to maintain and improve the business.
“Since graduating I, like many others in the current economic climate, I have found it difficult to get a job so I thought that buying my own business would be a great step forward,” said Max.
“I’ve always enjoyed good wine with my family, am also very interested in the nuts and bolts of running a business and plan to get my WSET (Wines & Spirits Education Trust) level 2 diploma.”
Max will be helped in the shop by his father, John, and plans to continue providing customers with good and knowledgeable advice about wine.
“The shop has always had a very loyal clientele and we hope to continue to provide that almost bespoke level of personal service for them,” he added.
“We offer a range of affordable, day-to-day wines up to wines which you would buy for really special occasions and can advise them on what wines suit what particular event and food; we also intend to continue to stock the wines that the customers enjoy.”
A lover of clarets himself, Max can see opportunities in extending the range of New Zealand wines – “I have family out there and the country is producing some very exciting wine at the moment”.
Other plans include updating the company logo, increasing the number of days that the shop is open from five to six days and improving the online side of the business.
“It’s a very exciting time although I know it’s going to be a real challenge,” he said.
