More than 150 people gathered in Marazion for the annual Civic Service.

The parade, accompanied by Breage Band, made its way from the town hall to Marazion Methodist Chapel on Sunday morning.

Deacon Geoff Tamblin led the service which focused on the need to work together as a community.

The Citizen of the Year award for 2013 was given to town councillor of more than 20 years, Penney Hosking.

Mrs Hosking, who devotes much of her time to voluntary groups in the town helping to make the community a better place, said it was a real surprise to win the award.

“I was absolutely delighted to win it. What people said was very touching. I do it because I like the town; I am very honoured and proud of Marazion. I don’t expect anything.”

Organist David Richards provided the music and Marazion School Choir sang traditional mining songs at the service, which was attended by community groups, organisations and businesses.

Mayor, Derek Laity, said it is the perfect opportunity to celebrate community spirit in the town.

“The town council is appreciative of all the hard work that the many dedicated volunteers carry out to make Marazion a better place to live. The town council cannot accomplish all that they need to do without working together with the populace and the focus of the service reflected this.

“The day was a great success and enjoyed by all those who attended. It was especially good to see three senior and respected members of the Town Trust, Ruben Collins, Godfrey Varker and Desmond Reynolds at the reception at the community centre.”
