Falmouth-based winch manufacturers, Spencer Carter Ltd has delivered its latest heavy-duty trawl winch to the Mylor scallop boat, 9.9m Amethyst.
Having a top-layer pull of 3.5 tons, the unit is heavily built to take its daily duties of hauling a total of ten dredges (five per side).
Richard Carter, part of the firm's technical and management team described the winch as "very strong and typical of a newer breed of trawl winch in today's industry".
"Everything is corrosion resistant and all steel parts are hot-dipped galvanized as opposed to being zinc sprayed. To take the heavy loading from ten dredges and contents, splines on the clutches are heavier duty and bigger, it's just small improvements on winches we have made over the past 30 years. No major advances on today's trawl winches are likely, and fishermen have settled into their size of boat too, and like the Amethyst many are under 10m in length."
Spencer Carter leads in the design and manufacture of net and pot haulers, its smallest unit, the Solo hauler aimed at boats under 30ft in length, has a strong following and more than 500 units have been produced since its inception in 1992. The latest Solo, fitted last week to St Mawes skipper Barnie Rosewall's 19ft boat, "will be a guinea pig having a new type of pot hauling sheaves," explained Mr Carter. "Traditional sheaves are made of steel yet we supply steel wear-plates as shoes to those sheaves, so we now supply alloy sheaves instead and will be looking closely at how those on Barnie's boat perform."
