A MAN had to be rescued by firefighters in St Austell this morning after he inexplicably became trapped beneath a large sheet of glass.

Paramedics requested support from the fire service after realising they would need specialist crash rescue equipment to shift the pane.

It is not known at this stage how the man became trapped, and no one at South Western Ambulance Service has been available to shed more light on the accident, which happened on Stennack Road, at around 9.40am.

Several glass-related businesses are located on the road.

A fire service spokesman said: “Following a call from the ambulance service to assist them with reports of a male trapped beneath a large sheet of glass, one appliance from St Austell along with the rescue tender from Bodmin and a wholetime officer were mobilised to Stennack Road ,St Austell.

“Crash rescue equipment was used to release the male who was then conveyed by land ambulance to hospital. Cornwall Fire and Rescue have no further details on this incident.”
