DETECTIVES have named a man they are searching for in relation to a stabbing in Newquay on Monday afternoon.

They are urging anyone who knows the whereabouts of 57-year-old John Bellman to contact them immediately.

A man remains in a serious condition after he was stabbed in the chest inside a premises in the Mount Wise area at around 1.25pm.

The 48-year-old victim, believed to be from St Austell, was treated at Newquay Hospital before being airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

The weapon used in the attack has not yet been found.

Inspector Dave Meredith said: "Although this is a very serious incident where the victim has sustained puncture wound to the chest, such incidents are very rare in Newquay. CID officers are investigating this incident and extra patrols are being mounted in the local area."

The man's condition has been described as "serious but stable".

Police have raised concerns for the welfare of Mr Bellman, who they believe may have sustained an injury during Monday's incident.

A spokesman said: "Although we not believe that Mr Bellman represents a threat to other members of the public I would ask that if he is seen then to exercise caution not to approach him and report this sighting to the police."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

There may not be a lot of knife crimes in Newquay, it is only a small place. One knife attack is one to many. My son knows of at least 3 lads who have been attacked in the last eight weeks, the police are not interested. One of the lads walked & was attacked, did not have any thing stolen just badley attacked, where there was cctv the police fail to see anything. One of the lads was slashed across the face with a blade. My son & his friends do not feel safe walking the streets in the evining & can't understand why the police don't seem to do anything about it. What are they waiting for someone to be killed. Come on police do something so people can walk round in the evening & feel safe Newquay as a bad reputation anyway it needs to be cleaned up so people can come & enjoy the resort again.

The police will charge with something close to attempt murder-the CPS will plea bargin down to ABH- the courts will sentence him or her to common assault- the public will end up paying for his or hers counciling and a holiday!! Same old justice system!!!!

I can remember when all the fuss about knife crime started it was going to be a mandatory prison sentence for possession. Wew frequently see people guilty of knife crime getting off and back on the streets. What is wrong with our so-called judiciary? They are there to punish the guilty ones and protect the general public. As a stab wound almost anywhere on the body could be fatal I hope they will treat this as attempted murder and the sentence to fit the crime but I won't hold my breath in this PC world where the rights of the offender seem to take priority over those of the victim.
