A LISKEARD man was left with a bruised and bloody face after two “cowardly thugs” kicked and punched him in an unprovoked attack.

Christopher Prinn, 24 and Kamal Salt, 18, of Liskeard, assaulted Stephen Greenwood on September 20 and caused him actual bodily harm.

At Truro Crown Court on Wednesday, Ramsay Quaife, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said Mr Greenwood had spent the evening in the Cornish Ivy pub with friends and was walking along Pound Street at about midnight when he was assaulted.

A colleague of Mr Greenwood’s was also on the street and the two men had exchanged greetings before going their separate ways.

Aidan Cole heard Prinn swear and shout ‘come on then’ and started to make his way back towards his colleague.

Mr Quaife said: “As he approached Stephen Greenwood he could see that he was holding up his hands palms outwards as if trying to diffuse matters.

“He then saw the defendant Prinn punch Stephen Greenwood to the face and it was with sufficient force to knock him to the ground.”

Salt then joined in by kicking Mr Greenwood.

Mr Quaife said the sight made Mr Cole feel sick: “He was to describe it as if Mr Greenwood’s head was being kicked like a football ... it did not end there because Prinn then held on to Stephen Greenwood’s hands and stamped on his head.”

Mr Cole could see a lot of blood and so he went up to Salt and punched him and tried to push Prinn, of Lanchard Road, away, giving Mr Greenwood the chance to escape.

Mr Greenwood received a badly swollen black eye in the attack and told police he felt sore all over his body although there did not appear to be any permanent damage.

In a victim statement read out in court, he said: “I am a grown man and I have been all of the world with the Navy and I have never been as sacred as I was when this happened.”

Salt, of Varley Lane, also admitted two charges of assaulting by beating his former partner Hannah Mason and Billy Rowe and one of destroying a phone belonging to Ms Mason on December 2.

On that day he went to Ms Mason’s home in Menheniot.

Mr Quaife said: “This defendant went berserk. He punched Ms Mason, she was headbutted, she was kicked in the leg, her phone was grabbed and it was thrown and it was smashed.

“Mr Rowe was punched repeatedly and in fact he left that house, leaving Ms Mason alone with this defendant and her young son.”

Julian Berg, defending, said Salt was born in Yemen and had moved to the UK a few years ago but had difficulty adapting to a new way of life and had taken up binge drinking.

Of the attack on Mr Greenwood, he said: “He finds it hard to accept he could have behaved in that manner to somebody he does not know, had no grudge with and as far as he is aware, had never seen before.”

Chris Spencer said that Prinn’s relationship had ended shortly before the incident but he did not accept that he had stamped on Mr Greenwood.

Sentencing them to 12 months in jail, Judge Christopher Harvey Clark, QC, described the attack as sickening and said: “You both behaved like cowardly thugs.”

Salt received a further four months in prison for his attacks on Ms Mason and Mr Rowe.

Twinscrew - you're completely misguided. If you knew the family then you'd know that the mother struggles with English, he has a younger sister in college and a father who is very ill. The reason they left Yemen is one which I shall not disclose, but they cannot simply up and leave. I'm not saying I accept what he did, it was completely horrific and I'm disgusted to know the guy.. However making him 'go back to Yemen' would not only be a lesser punishment but it would cause havoc with the family's emotional state.

I knew Prinn several years ago, he would stop me in the street and hurl abuse, and try to get his sheep to beat me up, 12 months in jail will never change a waste of space like him.
