Liskeard-Looe will meet Longevens in the final of the National Junior Vase final in February after defeating Topsham at Lux Park on Saturday.

The Lions ran out 28-10 winners against their Devon 1 visitors and only Gloucestershire outfit Longevens stand between them and Vase success. The sides will meet in the South West final at Lux Park on February 1.

However, Saturday’s success did come at a cost after they lost Brad Burchell through injury.

In the opening minutes the Lions went on the attack, a wrong option was taken and they were turned over and on winning the ball Topsham ran it straight back for the opening try, scored by Adam Buckley, with Phil Irish converting.

At the restart a scrum was awarded to Liskeard and they attacked down the right through Burchell. He was tackled and unfortunately sustained a bad injury and the referee was forced to stop the game, until the ambulance arrived.

The game was restarted 25 minutes later and Liskeard were immediately awarded a scrum and from this No.8 Baz Hocking ran through for a try that was converted by James Noel-Johnson.

Within 10 minutes Liskeard gave away a penalty wide out on their 22 but unfortunately for the visitors this was missed.

At the restart Liskeard gave away another penalty; this time Phil Irish’s kick was successful, to put Topsham ahead again.

On 20 minutes a Liskeard catch and drive line out was finished off with prop Mike Mander dotting down and Noel-Johnson added the extras, from wide out.

On 27 minutes Liskeard lock Yestin Hutchings was shown a yellow card and eight minutes later they gave away a penalty but Topsham spurned the chance of narrowing the deficit when the kick faded and went wide.

On 38 minutes, from a quickly taken penalty, Noel-Johnson made a break to send Hocking in from 30 metres for his second try of the afternoon; Noel-Johnson converted to take the score to 21-10 at the whistle.

Ten minutes into the second half Topsham also went down to 14 men when their scrum half was sin-binned and on 60 minutes after a couple of drives by the Lions’ pack the ball was released to the backs and wing Ben Kitto crossed the whitewash for a try that was converted by Noel-Johnson to make it 28-10.

During the last quarter of the game despite chances being made there was no further scoring by either side.
