TRURO has a new city councillor following a hotly contested by-election.

Liberal Democrat Bridget Andrews won the Trehaverne seat with 540 votes, beating restaurant manager Noel 'Sunny' Krishnan with 226 votes for the Conservatives.

Mrs Andrews said her priorities were saving trees on Highertown, sorting out parking in the Hendra area and "generally standing up for the people of Truro".

With the conservatives determined to build west of Truro, when we have awful traffic jams already, I am glad an Englishwoman has won, rather than another incoming rich conservative. If we can save Highertown's trees, several magnificent, they can't double the road. There is still a huge battle to be won, to stop Truro's expansion WEST. Yes, we need AFFORDABLE housing, but at what point do the powers that be acknowledge that there's only ONE road in to Truro from the WEST and it's FULL. It's getting hard to get out of 3MS and Chacewater in the rush hour, let alone the industrial estate.
