The launch of a new book in Leedstown on Friday evening was a truly Cornish affair.

The Grand Bard of Cornwall, Maureen Fuller, was among the guests at the launch of Richard Jenkin: A Great Son of Cornwall.

An invited audience of sponsors, contributors, family and friends attended Leedstown Village Hall.

The book was compiled by Derek Williams and contains original essays by writers about various aspects of Richard Jenkin’s work for Cornwall and the wider Celtic world, as well as his writings and tributes from friends and colleagues.

Ann Jenkin, who was married to Richard, said he “was an important member both of the Crowan Parish community and of Cornwall where he held many offices, including that of Grand Bard of Gorsedh Kernow, life president of the Celtic Congress, president of the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies and of Esethvos Kernow as well as being founder member and president of Mebyon Kernow and a considerable lecturer, poet and writer both in Cornish and English.

“It was a relaxed occasion and a good way to celebrate ‘A Great Son of Cornwall’.”

There were several readings from the book and Cornwall Councillor Bert Biscoe read poetry by the protagonist. There was also Breton and Cornish dancing.

Donations from the evening were given to Leedstown Village Hall, Leedstown WI and Gorsedh Kernow towards its next publication.

The book, published by Francis Boutle in association with Gorsedh Kernow, is now on sale for collection at £12.50.
